Job Summary
To take the lead in executing year-round campus grounds maintenance programs.
Responsibilities
Executes specialized turfgrass maintenance programs for aeration, pesticide application, seeding, fertilization, and turf renovation for all non-athletic turf areas. Participates in the execution of snow and ice control programs related to campus roads and parking lots. Performs routine lawn mowing, trimming, and edging tasks for all non-athletic turf areas. Maintains and repairs all irrigation systems for non-athletic turf areas. Executes grounds programs pertaining to the planting and maintenance of all campus groundcovers, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Oversees and directs the work of student employees. Organizes and cleans grounds shop and storage areas. Assists in the maintenance of grounds vehicles and equipment. Assists in the preparation for, and grounds support of, events on the athletic fields. Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
Working knowledge of common methods of propagating, cultivating, maintaining, and repairing turfgrass. Working knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in the proper application of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals commonly used in the management of turfgrass. Basic knowledge of accepted methods of propagating, cultivating, pruning, preparing soils for and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and groundcovers. Basic knowledge of the equipment, products and techniques commonly used in snow and ice control operations in the upper Midwest. Basic knowledge of the equipment, products, and techniques used in the scheduling, maintenance, and repair of underground irrigation systems. Basic knowledge of the procedures used in the maintenance and repair of landscapes and paved areas. Skill in the use and safe operation of medium to heavy duty grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment including commercial riding mowers, tractors, heavy duty pickup trucks, skid loaders, and pickup truck snowplows. Skill in the use and safe operation of small grounds maintenance tools and equipment including push mowers, trimmers, chain saws, power tools, and hand tools. Must be detail-oriented and have effective verbal and written communication skills. Must have a valid Minnesota driver's license; CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is preferred. Must be able to obtain a Minnesota non-commercial pesticide applicator's license. Must be able to work both as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision. Experience
Required:
2-3 years of landscaping, turf management, or grounds maintenance experience. Education
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Additional Information Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, performing heavy manual labor in all kinds of weather, occasionally in extreme weather conditions. Must be able to lift carry and move weights of up to 75 pounds on a frequent basis. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate equipment and read technical and safety information. Must be able to work in standing, stooping and kneeling positions for extended periods of time and must be able to work in a sitting position on a piece of equipment for extended periods of time. Must be able to safely handle chemicals such as automotive cleaners and solvents, fertilizers and pesticides; must wear the appropriate protective equipment for handling such materials (gloves, goggles, splash guard, apron, etc.). This is a 40 hours per week, 12 month position. Individual must comply with environmental health and safety requirements and procedures as outlined in University and State policies and directives. This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal work hours if needed to support contingency operations such as snow and ice control or support of special events. Summer maintenance work presents unique demands on the department and vacation opportunities are normally limited during Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends due to graduation and welcome week events. Also, vacations are normally limited beginning the first full week of August through Labor Day due to the wrap-up of summer projects and preparation for the start of the school year. Salary: $22.00 - $22.75/hour
